The History Of Purcellville, Virginia
Purcellville, Virginia was first settled in 1764, and became incorporated as a town in 1908. The name Purcellville came from Valentine Vernon Purcell, the towns post master in the mid 1800’s.
It was settled around an ox trail known as the Great Road which has now become the Snickersville Turnpike.
In both 1900 and 1914 a series of fires raged through the town and destroyed many of the earlier buildings, depriving the town of much of its architectural heritage.
Up until the early 2000’s, Purcellville had been a very rural town. In the last decade, though, it has become increasingly urbanized.
Now you can get almost anything you need right in town. The urbanization hasn’t taken away from Purcellville’s small town charm.
